Feng Shui for Modern Living : I Ching

Introduction

The Chinese I Ching divination method has been used for thousands of years to determine the best course of action. It is based on 64 hexagrams, each of which is made up from a pair of the Chinese Trigrams. To use the I Ching you must have a specific question in mind, concerning future choices or actions, and which does not have a simple "Yes" or "No " answer.

The question should be phrased as "What will happen if..." rather than "Should I do X".

The I Ching program lets you create a reading using various methods, including the traditional Yarrow sticks and Chinese coins.

Throw I Ching - this is the main window which displays the I Ching reading. To select a reading first choose the method:

Throw - using a random number generated from the instant at which you click the button.
Coins - this uses the traditional method of throwing three coins. The coins are thrown six times, one for each line of the hexagram.
Yarrow - the Yarrow stalks is the original method, and this option shows you in detail how the Yarrow sticks are thrown and divided to create the hexagram.

Once you have thrown the I Ching the screen displays the reading, which is made up from:

Hexagram name - in Chinese, with English translation.
Hexagram Image - a phrase that you will need to interpret reflecting the meaning of the hexagram.
The Hexagram and it's component Trigrams - the six lines of Yin and Yang making up the hexagram.
Hexagram Significance - the characteristics and aspects of the hexagram.
Hexagram Judgement - the main reading from which you should interpret the answer.

I Ching Partner - this button lets you use the I Ching to get a reading about your compatibility with a partner.

The program pops up a window for you to enter the dates of birth of yourself and your partner, and then determines the Hexagram from the Trigrams relating to the two dates of birth. The readings are the same as those shown above for the basic I Ching divination, but need to be read in the context of a partnership.

Use the Switch button to invert the trigrams - this shows you the alternate aspect from your partner's perspective.

I Ching Lottery - this is a way to use the I Ching to determine lucky lottery numbers. Click on the Lottery button at the top right and a row of numbers is displayed, with their associated I Ching hexagram readings. If you don't like the reading - don't use the numbers, and click the button for another set.

The program lets you specify how many numbers you need for your particular lottery, and also the highest number required.

Browse I Ching - this window lets you select the I Ching hexagrams from a pick list, and is for information only.
